Alpe Adria Spring Race 2012

No FAI points, just FUN points as I promised!!!

Finally we made it!

After many many canceled days in 2011 and one in 2012....

Considering the trend of this period, obviously, the weather it has been a little bit crazy, and for a while, when all the gliders where ready and rigged on the Lijak ramp take off, I thought..." oh...damn... we are fu***d up.... :( "

In the upper levels, NW wind was blowing... not strong as the previous day.... but the clouds were not like saturday... the cu's, forming on the ridge and behind, came back in front of it creating  a mass of clouds that overcasted the valley and put it in a total shadow.... no wind on take off...

a little bit of east on the Kovk ridge, 15km easter....no thermals...

damn... but let's hope... it was early... there was time enaugh to wait a good window of free sky coming from back to let the sun work on the ground...enaugh to let me start the pilots and let them to reach enaugh altitude to manage wheather changements during the task...

I set with Diego "Lupo" and Matjaz a 60 km task only in Lijak's area, not too far on the east towards Kovk and Nanos, with TPs up and down the valley, where it was possible to change the flight tactics depending on weather variations...

and so it was....

a great task, really technical...... Matjaz told me...."wow..perfect task...it was like flying 100 km!!!"

true...

the condition changed so many times when we were flying that it seemed not to be in the same valley all the time....

a lot of savings from extremly low positions, then fightings with strong thermals till basecloud @2300m ASL, then on the hills working with smooth and soft lifts.... then thermals in light rain, and some glides through big water drops... :)

but all the time in a totally safe condition... in fact the clouds developed fast and dropped little rains to disappear immediatly without any kind of overgrow.... really really a nice and particular condition.

By the way.... my flight is not to be considered... I organized everything alone this time and I spent a lot of time to register pilots, ulpload their gps, then the logistic, food, then the task and briefing, putting away things from take off area....

I was surprised that I was able to rig the glider too :))))

in the end I started as last, but 20 minutes...or more... after the start gate opened...

in fact when everybody took off, and I arrived on ramp the sun disappeared again... the wind dropped down...and sometimes came from behind due to a thermal just in front of the ramp...

we waited a lot (me and an other pilot)... then the sun came again... and we started our race... maybe should have been better not to put only one start gate...

But let's talk about the podium!!!

ALAN SATTLER wins the Alpe Adria Trophy! Great job Alan!!! You will enjoy the trophy for a year, then in the next edition you'll must win again to take care of it for another year and to write again your name on the plate!!! :)))

MATJAZ KLEMENCIC is second!!!! Well done my friend! The silver trophy now is your forever!!! 

DAVE MAY, third!!! From Australia!!! wowwww!!! Really happy, man, to have had you and Kathryn to fly with us... I saw that you were satisfied and this is the best price! ... so now, the bronze trophy will migrate on the other side of the world!!! :))))

And now, the race and the trophy are international, too!!! Let it grow!! :)

I wanna thanks all the pilots that came to fly even if the weather was uncertain, Paki for pictures and support, Igor for logistics, food and drinks at landing field.

really satisfied by my 6th place considering my late start :))) 

not all pilots are in the results because they didn't download their tracks after the race.... 5 landed very fast in a shadow moment...

Alla fine, dopo mille rinvii ed annullamento nel 2011, ed un rinvio nel 2012.... l'abbiamo fatta!!!!

Rispettando ovviamente la tradizione degli ultimi tempi, la meteo è stata incerta anche questa volta e per un attimo ho addirittura avuto il brutto presentimento che ne sarebbe venuto fuori un flop....

...nordovest ancora presente in quota, anche se meno intenso del sabato, e cuuli che dopo una mattinata soleggiata e tersa, sono cresciuti estendendosi velocemente su tutta la valle e mettendo in ombra tutta la valle...

vento nullo in pedana, notizie di un est leggero ad Aidussina...ahi ahi... qui non solo rischiamo di non fare la task lunga fino al Nanos... ma magari non riusciamo nemmeno a fare una mini task in zona....

e chi glielo spiega poi alla ventina di piloti in decollo con già tutti i delta montati?

...bisogna pazientare... è l'una.... immagino e spero che in breve si aprirà uno scorcio come il giorno prima.... magari il sole sarà meno forte e non saturerà il cielo di nubi...

...ed infatti...
da nord arriva il sereno... non durerà molto... bisognerà usare quella finestra buona per far decollare tutti e metterli al sicuro in quota per lo start prima che un altro ciclo di nubi rimetta in ombra la valle....
l'importante è partire e far quota, poi la cosa si può gestire.

Con Diego "Lupo" e Matjaz preparo una task di sicurezza, tutta sul versante del Lijak con delle boe in pianura per poter dare varie opzioni ai piloti in caso di repentine variazioni di vento e meteo, così come la giornata sembrava presagire.
60 km
Start a Sempas, di fronte al decollo, con raggio di 3000 metri in ingresso in modo da lasciare tutto il costone libero per far quota e non costringere i piloti in grappoli troppo ravvicinati, poi boa al centro dello start, collina di Loke a NO, ritorno a sud est sulla chiesa di Ravne, collina di Skabrijel, viadotto autostrada in pianura, di nuovo collina di Skabrijel, Cernice e final glide in atterraggio con raggio di 800m.

Il sole arriva, il costone inizia a lavorare bene e tutti decollano.... quasi tutti... :)
Start alle 14:00.

Io ovviamente, dopo aver caricato i gps, organizzato i viveri, preparato la task, fatto il briefing, dato istruzioni,  messo via tutto, mi ritrovo ultimo con un altro pilota....già tanto a pensarci che sia riuscito a montare il delta...... il cielo si ricopre ed il vento si spegne di nuovo...
vabbè.... aspettiamo...
l'importante è che tutti siano in volo, alcuni in base cumulo a 2000 metri, altri a lottare col costone, altri nella via di mezzo.
....la gara parte e noi ancora lì ad aspettare il sole ed il ritorno del termico... ironia della sorte, c'era una termica di fronte alla pedana... poiane e delta la giravano... noi li guardavamo e non potevamo decollare perchè la termica richiamava aria e portava il vento a zero, se non a momenti da dietro....

ok, alla fine il sole arriva... il vento ritorna e partiamo.....
da lì in poi una task di soli 60 km che sembravano 100. Recuperi da bassi incredibili, basi a 2300, termiche nella pioggerella e traversoni nella pioggia consistente.... ogni metro studiato e conquistato con le unghie....
alla fine solo in tre hanno chiuso la manche:

Io non sono riuscito a chiudere perchè mi son ritrovato in una bella scaricata d'acqua andando verso l'ultima boa assieme al Gioppo! Grande anche lui. Atterraggio con delta bagnati e vento da nord....insolito...

Ma tutto in sicurezza.... i cumuli montavano, scaricavano e svanivano continuamente, senza sovrasvilppare.

Menzione particolare per Igriza Flora, che ha condotto una gran task arrivando corto di soli due km alla sua seconda....o terza... race!!!

Il trofeo della Spring Race è ora internazionale! Chi lo porterà a casa l'anno prossimo scrivendoci sopra il suo nome?

P.S.: scrivo questo p.s. ora (lunedì) dopo aver stilato le classifiche quasi complete....
alla fine non posso che esser soddisfatto anche della mia posizione considerata la partenza in super ritardo :)))
nelle classifiche che trovate qui assieme alle tracce da scaricare, non ci sono tutti i piloti, perchè alcuni non hanno consegnato il gps....
